Originally knitted using Lister Lee Target Can-Can yarn with a tension of 8 sts and 14 rows to 2" (5cm), using no. 3 (6.5mm) needles. I believe this yarn was a chunky weight yarn.
For success you should work a tension piece with your substitute yarn.
